1988 The GREATEST year in Hip Hop Music

1988 The GREATEST year in Hip Hop Music

SCtapesSmall2

I’ve designated The Golden Era of Hip Hop 1983 – 1988 a 5 year span, thought process is every year a good album or song came out cannot be the Golden Era
and that in changes and shifts in the Hip Hop content so should the era

Golden Era – Gold Chains and Sneakers
Silver Era – Fitteds and African Medallions
Bronze – Mafioso, Champagne, Drugs, etc.

With all that being said in my opinion The Golden Era’s best was the end 1988 … I consider this to be THE BEST YEAR IN HIP HOP MUSIC

The number of classic albums and singles released in 1988 is staggering; I’m going out on a limb to say there is no year that is comparable song for song album for album to ’88
(Feel free to dispute in the comments)

How can I make such a claim? Let’s go through the year … through the list, let me show you…

January

Where’s the Party At?

CMandMarv

People sleep on this group; they were basically DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince … with a little more edge.
Like Jeff and Prince were DC and Money and Marvelous were Marvel unfortunately at the time there was only room for one Philly group in that lane
I can’t say that the album was a classic but it had a few singles that were dope “Play it cool” and “Find an Ugly woman”

Just the beginning of the greatest year of #HipHop

Life Is… Too Short – Too $hort

FileToo_$hort_Life_Is...Too_Short

Too $hort had about 12,478 tapes out by the time 1988 rolled around, Born to Mack got him worldwide appeal and the follow up to that “Life is …” kept his momentum going with the title track and

What More Can I Say? – Audio Two

FileWhat_Can_I_Say

All you really need is “Top Billin” to lock down this whole month! This slept on album had a few gems on it “The Questions”, “I don’t care”, and “Giz Starts Buggin”
Personally I still bang “Hickey’s on my neck” and “I like cherries” Milk and Giz were never able to capture the fire from this album but it’s a classic.

Goin’ Off

February 23

FileGoinOff

The debut album from The Diabolical Biz Markie, this album has standouts
Nobody beats the Biz, Goin Off, Make The Music, Nobody beats the Biz, and of course The Vapors … the Juice Crew production was second to none as well
Biz and TJ swan dropped hits on this one

When I fell in love with Hip Hop

Anyone that knows me knows I love Hip Hop music … and I can talk it all day; ever since the movie “Brown Sugar” (one of my personal favorites) came out people ask “When did you fall in love with Hip Hop?”
…I’ve never really answered that on my site I don’t think … so why not now?

Introduced to Hip Hop

I found Hip Hop with Rappers Delight and Rappin and Rocking the House by the Funky Four Plus One
The sounds were different I already knew the track for Rappers Delight but they were talking over it lol … what really grabbed my attention was Wonder Mike talking about going over his friend’s house to eat
… said their food was ugly and stunk LOL
That was all I had heard but then The Funky Four Plus One more made that Rappin and Rockin and Sha Rock KILLED that joint! (http://youtu.be/fUUyGxRoDQY)
I think I was doing the Wop before The Wop came out LOL

…………………………………………………………………..

Started Dating Hip Hop

Play at your own Risk and Planet Rock was being played EVERYWHERE like no one disliked those songs lol
I think I got my first Box then … I remember sitting outside on the steps rockin’ The Message that track was an animal!
Apache and 8th Wonder dropped (I still have the vinyl) and “That’s the Joint” by F4+1 was real dope

By 3rd and 4th grade I was all in

Back then you could go to the local record store and the cooler people that worked there would make you a tape w/ all the new joints that came out or whatever was hot for $10
(The First Mix tapes) … that’s how I was exposed to all the different songs, I didn’t have $10 (I was in Grade school! lol) but I knew people that did and I just dubbed their joints
I remember my first tape had “It’s Yours” by T La Rock on it, it was the second to last song on the first side … I remember because I kept rockin that joint lol
Rock Box by Run DMC popped off too … that was on MTV, like that was the first time I really SAW Hip Hop

…………………………………………………………………..

Fell in Love with Hip Hop

But I truly fell in Love w/ Hip Hop in 1984

I was over my Grandmother’s house and my Uncle had the UTFO “Hangin’ out” Single and on the B Side there was a song called “Roxanne Roxanne”
I played that joint and thought it was extra dope because of how they all rhymed about the same chick, 3 different styles, having fun and the beat was sick … plus the scratching I loved it

But then …

I Heard Roxanne’s Revenge by Roxanne Shante (btw my 2nd Fav Hip Hop Song of all time)

She was 14 and the whole joint was freestyle!
The way that beat dropped and hearing Shante’s cracky Voice spit and go hard on the three guys that made the original joint … like legit beef style lol
I was wrapped up in it! I LOVED that song
That summer I’d put it on my mother’s stereo put the speakers up in the window and go outside and kick it… sit and write rhymes
We’d play bullshit games or whatever but I rocked that joint to death! I still do to this day … Roxanne’s Revenge always makes me happy

The song was SO dope it started The “Roxanne Wars” like one of the most influential times in Hip Hop … go Google it!

Top 15 Beat Box Songs of All Time

Inspired by the “Top 10 Beat Box Artists” post I did, I wanted to actually shine a light on some of the songs those guys made, The emcee / Beat Box dynamic is one of the cornerstones of early Hip Hop and one of the more raw forms of the music … what I did was compile 15 of the best Beat Box and Emcee collaborations with one caveat … no musical backing.

Meaning no extra music just the man and the mouth … not a couple I had to include even though a snare or a horn was mixed in (I didn’t mix the records lol) but for the most part most of these songs are just the beat and the rhyme

Listen to them and leave a few comments when you’re done, enjoy.

Top 15 Beat Box Songs of All Time

15. Sitting in My Car – 1995 (Slick Rick & Doug E Fresh)

Sittin; in my Car was released in 1995 on Slick Rick’s “Behind Bars” album, it featured the remix was the first time he and Doug E Fresh reunited on wax since La Di Da Di and The Show
The Song was about Rick and his woman who was acted high post and was probably cheating … and he’s being a creeper scoping them out from his car lol
The beat Box from Doug was pretty basic but to have Fresh on the Beat Box and The Ruler Rhyming … felt like old times

Slick Rick & Doug E Fresh – “Sittin In My Car”

0.36503284610807896
Listen to Sittin

14. The Lesson Part 1 – 1993 (The Roots)

Released in 1993 on The Roots second album Do You Want More?!!!??! *Track 32 (In keeping with Organix continuity)* The Lesson Part 1 is one of the illest lyrical sparring sessions on wax, the emcees are Black Thought and Dice Raw
The beat box is done by Rahzel (Beat Box Rank 8); supposedly the Dice Raw verse was freestyle off the top; if this is so then Wow. Anyway, The beat box by Rahzel isn’t done in the standard/typical fashion it’s more bass heavy and he uses other sounds as well
Incredibly dope song

Top 50 Hip Hop Groups of All Time

This site will have a lot of lists; Top 10, Top 25, Top 50 etc. revolving around Hip Hop this particular list will be the Top 50 Hip Hop Groups of all time

It was real easy for me to come up with a top 50, and I was tempted to do that and post them but I figured it would be a good experiment to solicit other opinions and compare them to mine, what Hip Hop groups do people consider great?
I decided to open the question to a few of my friends whose Hip Hop opinions I trusted, and then to their friends … this all came with some eye opening results!

This is how it was done, each person ranked their personal 50 Hip Hop Groups
Those who weren’t able to rank a full 50 (lames) did their best
The lists were compiled and averaged out, meaning the group got their ranks added together and divided by the number of participants
If a group was ranked by one person but not by another, that group received a 51 for not being ranked and that number went into the average to make things fair

Example

… In this example The Jungle Brothers were not even ranked by Persons 2 and 3 but since they were ranked so high by the other 3 the overall rank is higher than Stetsasonic who only went un-ranked by Person 1
This is was done to make sure things were weighted as fair as this nonscientific poll could possibly be lol

The only caveat or rule: Each group must have at least TWO emcees … no Emcee/DJ duos allowed (Gangstarr, Eric B and Rakim, DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince, etc.) That will be a list for the future

There were a total of 18 participants in the rating/ranking pool, among them were:

@Mo_Rease
@mrgaines7
@ShareefJackson
@callmeplatinum1
@cminous
@rayyLive
@Lizzs_Lockeroom
@DWiz2574
@AmazingJayce
@absolutevenus

Interesting things happened while doing this list …

  • Wu Tang, Outkast, De La Soul, and Camp Lo were not ranked AT ALL by some
  • The Fu Schickens ranked AHEAD of: ATCQ, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, etc.
  • The Lost Boyz got a Rank of 3
  • EPMD received a rank of 30
  • 2 Live Crew were ranked 7th
  • Salt N Pepa Ranked 3rd overall
  • Insane Clown Posse and TRU were ranked period lol
These things ALL affect the final rankings!

… some people whose Hip Hop opinions I previously trusted has now come into question lol

Anyway with all that being said lets countdown the

Top 20 Hip Hop Crews

In Hip Hop other than having talent be it emceeing, beatboxing, DJing, or Breaking; you had to have a crew … a posse, as Hip Hop Music started to take over more and more artists had crews, crews of all kinds and fans would identify with them and treat them almost as sports teams, I decided to rank 20 of the more accomplished and popular crews in Hip Hop.

I didn’t go too old, and I didn’t include The Zulu nation (that would be cheating lol) instead I went with notable members or accomplishment/influence on the genre … and once we hit the top 10 (later) Overall dopeness

With all that being said, here’s 20 – 11 –>

20. The Commission

I’m giving the Commission some shine here though they never actually formed
The brain child of The Notorious BIG and shoutoted out in the beginning of “What’s Beef” on his ‘Life After Death’ album the members were to include
BIG aka Frank White
Jay-Z aka Iceberg slim
Charli Baltimore
Lil Cease aka Casear Leo de Janeiro
Lance Rivera aka Uncle Paulie
…and Puff Daddy using the name P Diddy

We can only imagine how nice the songs and subsequent album could’ve been

19. Flavor Unit

The Flavor Unit was a true crew doing more than just rhyme they had a ton of DJs and it turned into a management company
Started by DJ Mark the 45 King (shoutouts to the 900 number) the crew evolved way beyond its members, the reason it’s so low is because the actual members of the crew’s music wasn’t as strong as others

The original members were:
DJ Mark the 45 King
Lakim Shabazz
Queen Latifah
Apache
Chill Rob G
Lord Alibaski
Latee
Shoutouts to The Rotten Rascals, The Almighty R.S.O (Benzino’s original crew), and Zhane

18. The Hilltop Hustlers

Led and created by emcee Steady B, the Philly based crew made a lot of noise in the mid/late 80s they never made an album together but the group Steady formed CEB were able to make “Countin Endless Bank” in ’92
Other things of note: Steady B and Cool C of The Hilltop are currently serving life sentences with no parole and the latter on death row, EST (of Three Times Dope) went on to write “Baby Boy”, “Cater to you”, and “Dangerously in love” among others for Beyonce

Members: Steady B, Cool C, Three Times Dope, Da Youngstas, and Menatlly Gifted

17. State Property

Philly continued to represent on into the 90s with State Property, led by Beanie Sigel he brought us two albums, a clothing line and two movies after linking up with Jay-Z and Roc-A-Fella records
Members: Beanie Sigel, Freeway, Oschino and Sparks, The Young Gunz, and Peedi Crackk

16. Flip Mode Squad

The Flip Mode Squad had some promise, headed and created by Busta Rhymes it was used as a vehicle to showcase and introduce new talent under his umbrella most notably Rah Digga who at the time was one of the top female hip hop artists out
Rampage and Spliff star were also introduced as well as Lord Have Mercy, Lord Have had one of the more original/interesting styles of rhyme but was never really showcased or given shine on albums
the majority of the original members has since left and been replaced with a bunch of no names and unnoticeables

The original members were featured in the 1998 album “The Imperial”

Members: Busta Rhymes, Spliff Star, Rah Digga, Rampage, Lord Have Mercey, Baby Sham,

15. The Diplomats

Anchored by Cam’Ron the Dipset first got their shine on his 2000 release: Sports, Drugs, and Entertainment and even more so on Come home with me due mainly to the singles “Oh Boy” and “Hey Ma”
They were signed to Roc-a-fella records and later created their own imprint … also the crew has released multiple mixtapes and singles under the Dipset name “Diplomatic Immunity”

Members: Cam’ron, Jim Jones, Freekey Zekey, Juelz Santana

14. Terror Squad

The Terror Squad came out in 1998 introduced by Bronx rapper Fat Joe on his album “Don Cartagena (his best album)
They didn’t make classic songs together, they did release an album “The Album” in 1999 what made the collective strong was the late great Big Pun, one of the illest lyricists to ever do it
After Pun’s passing Remy Ma and Tony Sunshine joined the group but the crew’s banner was really being flown and upheld by Pun after he left The Squad was done (Even with the lean Back song)

Original Members: Fat Joe, Big Pun, Armageddon, Triple Seis, and Prospect

13. G Unit

The G Unit are here because they ran things in rap for a year and a half, fueled by the sudden super-stardom of 50 Cent and his debut “Get Rich or Dye Tryin” G Unit was everywhere, the mix tapes they dropped were like crack on the streets they had their own mix tape DJ
Really no 50 no G Unit but for that small time they had the radios on lock, clothing lines, etc. I was personally never a fan but … props

Members: 50 Cent, Tony Yayo, Lloyd Banks, Young Buck

12. Dungeon Family

The Dungeon Family is more of a collective instead of an actual crew, they have songwriters, producers, and rappers. They get props because of Outkast and Goodie Mob
I believe other acts such as Mista, Cool Breeze, Sleepy Brown, as well as Joi and Slimm Calhoun are also members they made one album together “Even in Darkness” in 2001

Members: Outkast, Cee Lo, Sleepy Brown, Goodie Mob, Backbone, Big Rube, Future

11. Cash Money Millionaires

Because of the single success of Juvenile and his “ha” song and the album 400 Degreez we were given The Cash Money Millionaires, regardless of your opinion of their music or influence on the genre you have to admit that they had an impact
They had their own established artists and then extended to Cash Money records and signed acts from all over looking to resurrect their careers
The Hot Boys and the Big Tymers together took over southern rap where No Limit left off

Album (And Movie): Baller Blockin’
Members: Juvenile, Lil Wayne, Mannie Fresh, B.G., The Birdman, Young Turk
